Good Morning CT Libraries, here is what is going on this week.
CLC HAPPENINGS
Thursday is the Academic Libraries Special Collections and Archives Roundtable<https://www.ctlibrarians.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1915583> talking about volunteers and the in-person Storytelling Roundtable<https://www.ctlibrarians.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1932579> at the Middletown Library Service Center.
Friday is the Young Adult Roundtable<https://www.ctlibrarians.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1939171> talking about teenage crowd control.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
eBooks
* HB 6958<https://cga.ct.gov/asp/cgabillstatus/cgabillstatus.asp?selBillType=Bill&bill_num=HB-6958> was passed unanimously out of the Planning and Development Committee on Friday. .
* You know that S.B. 1234<https://cga.ct.gov/asp/cgabillstatus/cgabillstatus.asp?selBillType=Bill&which_year=2025&bill_num=1234> was voted out of the Government Administration and Elections Committee two weeks ago.
* So, either one of them - or theoretically both of them - could advance to a full vote in either chamber. Which bill will go the distance? My bet would be on SB 1234 but don't hold me to it.
Freedom to Read
* SB 1271<https://cga.ct.gov/asp/cgabillstatus/cgabillstatus.asp?selBillType=Bill&bill_num=SB-1271> was voted out of the children's committee last week with substitute language. I heard the legislators talk about what they changed in the bill - removing the working group and requiring public libraries to post policies on their website - both of which sound like concessions to me - but the new bill language hasn't been posted.
* No news on HB 7014<https://www.cga.ct.gov/asp/cgabillstatus/cgabillstatus.asp?selBillType=Bill&bill_num=HB07014&which_year=2025> and I don't see an Education committee meeting on the calendar for this week. That doesn't mean it couldn't pop up unexpectedly later in the week, though.
NEWS OF NOTE
Keith Richards honored at the Westport Library<https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/keith-richards-westport-library-ct-governors-award-20203989.php>. You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might get a library card... oh and an award from the Governor. CT Insider asked the public about their thoughts on regulating books in public schools. The responses are beautiful <https://www.ctinsider.com/projects/2025/3-6-reader-responses/> .
One recent $27K theft aside, CT librarians are usually 'like detectives' watching their books. <https://www.middletownpress.com/news/article/ct-library-association-book-thefts-middletown-20202396.php>
CT legislative committee Oks bill prohibiting libraries from certain e-book contracts<https://ctmirror.org/2025/03/07/ct-library-e-book-contracts/>. This was also published in the Courant.
Grant allows Rockville Library to offer digital literacy classes. <https://patch.com/connecticut/vernon/grant-allowing-rockville-library-offer-digital-literacy-courses>
I don't normally share press releases but I just really love this idea. Berlin Peck is hosting a home décor swap shop. <https://patch.com/connecticut/berlin/redecorate-your-home-courtesy-berlin-librarys-swap-shop>
Drop me a line if you or your library is in the news and I've missed it!
Have a good week,
Ellen
