[CASL-L] One book one school successes for PreK-2 or PreK-5

Good suggestions at readtothem.org.  We did the Mouse and the Motorcycle,
Lemonade War, Charlotte's Web, Kenny and the Dragon, Gooseberry Park,
Humphrey (I don't recommend Mr Poppers Penguins - too dated), Clementine,
Wizard of Oz, Ranger in Time Oregon Trail
I've been retired for 3 years, so I don't know if the school (preK-4)
continued, but for 10 years we did a OSOB.  Our goal was for the families
to read the book, and it became clear over time that most did not.  We
scheduled the reading over a month, and tried different ways to get kids to
read the book- some chapters read aloud in school, having teachers record
chapters so families could listen at home, weekly trivia/comprehension
question contests with prizes.  The kickoff included 4 days of clues, and
encouragement for students to guess the title, which was Revealed at an all
school assembly.  We ended the month with an evening program of activities
- book trivia, art projects, vocab games, favorite character graph, other
ideas drawn from the characters' hobbies or qualities. Although a cohort of
parents really liked it, I became discouraged when families came to the
event, but only the children participated in the activities (or ran laps
around the room), and the parents talked at the edge of the room.  I think
the last year I was there, we did in school activities instead.
