[MCOH-EH] MCOH-EH Digest, Vol 253, Issue 125

Gordon, Lisa lgordon at emhs.org
Tue Apr 24 09:41:44 PDT 2018

We are in Maine where recreational is legal and still test for the substance. It is up to the employers drug testing policy (which hopefully they have on file with the State of Maine) as to how to handle a positive drug screen.

Thank you,

Lisa Gordon PA-C

List,

With the changes in some state laws regarding recreational marijuana, I would be interested in hearing how other healthcare organizations are handling pre-placement drug screening for THC. Are THC positive drug screens excluded from employment? Has anyone stopped testing for THC in pre-placement screening? Do you handle medical marijuana differently than recreational?

Thank you,

I will be following this thread as well as my organization is currently evaluating.

At this time, post-offer drug screens still include THC. Any positive results is read as positive. There is not an option for the MRO to determine negative based on medical recommendation. We are in California where recreational marijuana is legal but we still follow Federal statues in regards to drug screens for post-offer physicals.

Per our policy we do not allow any marijuana use and still test for at hire.
