Charlie-
For Faith Regional in Norfolk, Nebraska: all new employees, to include providers, undergo urine drug screen using an 8-panel rapid screen. Any non-negatives are then sent out (I think we use Quest) for confirmation. While I don’t act as the MRO for these tests, I will advise HR if the non-negative is for a prescription medication and the prospective employee provides reasonable evidence of prescription. We still send those out, but hiring actions are not delayed. Hiring actions are held up for non-negative drugs of abuse (marijuana is illegal in Nebraska for any use). We do not test for nicotine, health insurance benefit (discount) is based on self-disclosure.

Our health system is evaluating our drug testing program and was interested in what other health care systems were doing.
Do you do drug testing?
Is it part of your preplacement process and is it a rate limiting step?
Do you outsource to a Labcore or a Qwest type vendor?
Do you test for nicotine and if you do what do you do with the results?
Thank you very much for your input.
