[MCOH-EH] [EXTERNAL] Re: Testing Color Vision in Healthcare Institutions

Agree. Some individual surveyors don’t understand the difference between functional testing as in a competency test, and medical color vision testing. I think this is getting better though and CAP has gone from a strong statement about “color-blind testing” in 2004 to much better wording now.

CAP’s point of care compliance document states:
POC.06950 Visual Color Discrimination Phase I POCT personnel are tested for difficulty with visual color discrimination. NOTE: Formal color-blindness testing is not required for personnel who do not perform laboratory tests requiring color discrimination. Functional testing limited to discrimination of those colored items pertinent to the job is sufficient. Evidence of Compliance: ✓ Record of color discrimination testing OR functional assessment, if indicated
https://webapps.cap.org/apps/docs/education/OnlineCourseContent/2011/LAP/Resources/Checklists/POC.pdf

The Joint Commission recognizes that neither visual acuity nor color vision testing is required for employees, and recognize that an appropriately-designed competency test would be acceptable to assess the employee’s ability to do their job:

We found that color vision is very rarely an essential function in the lab. Manual Differential on CBC was one task and we created a practical test if anyone has abnormal color vision. The most common task requiring color vision was actually in the clinic setting with interpreting urine “dipsticks”. We also created a practical follow-up test for this.

Our lab accreditation surveyors require annual color vision testing. Not sure why it has to be annual, but lab educator does the annual testing.

We do color vision on all team members as it is part of our TITMUS vision test . We don’t have an issue with accommodating team members who are color blind in most cases.

Our surveyors always seem to ask for color vision testing on new hries, mostly related to Point of Care testing. A lot doesn’t make sense, but its easier for us to just test all on hire so we have the documentation.

WARNING: This email came from an external source outside of Tampa General Hospital.
I don’t know a complete list but historically kidney center/dialysis staff who provide direct clinical care have required color vision testing and ability at my affiliated institution
