[CASL-L] Leveling books in a middle school library

We use the Accelerated Reading program here at Vinal Tech.  Thus, it has become imperative that I label books with their reading level, interest level, and point value.  Students are required to read in a certain zone dependent upon their testing results.  And, they are required to reach a certain number of points each marking period (this is done by taking quizzes on each book read).

Student access is somewhat limited due to AR but it has gotten a lot of kids reading.  I like to believe that some of them will become life-long readers – that should be objective of the program!  The biggest problem I have is finding enough books for the readers at the top.  Not a lot of interest is available that are AR.

Things are a bit different at the high school level than they are for a middle school.  Is your school considering using AR?  If so then we should talk.

Good morning,

I was asked to discuss the possibility of leveling all of the books in the LMC. Using Fontas and Pinell. I am wondering if any other middle school has done this and the benefits of doing so. I have reservations about this as I do not want to limit access (or have a student perceived limited access) based on a level assigned to a book.

Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.
