[MCOH-EH] Source Patient Consent with BBP Exposures

Good Morning Emily.

We have been doing advance consent for hospital admission, ED and outpatient registration for about 15 years.  Minnesota is the State.  The consent specifies the reason testing is requested and who is authorized to receive results (the person doing the post-exposure evaluation which is usually occupational health).  Testing on the source and exposed person (if necessary) is done under a standing order by the Medical Director of Occupational Health.  Consent is clear that there is no charge for the testing.  Medical care is not contingent on signing this consent.

Curious as to how hospitals/academic medical centers are handling source patient consents regarding Bloodborne Pathogen exposures?  I am hearing from some organizations that they are obtaining consent ahead of time as part of admission paperwork (inpatient and outpatient settings) so as to not delay processing available blood in the lab.  This proactive consent contains wording that consent is given for BBP testing in the event it should occur during their admission or encounter.

I would love to hear from other organizations, particularly those in Georgia, as I know the rule can vary state to state.
